Polymarket, an Ethereum-based prediction and information market that lets you bet on a wide range of real-world events, has closed a $4 million funding round led by Polychain Capital. The round included some of the industry’s most well-known investors such as former AngelList CEO Naval Ravikant, former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan, CoinShares CSO Meltem Demirors, among others. Polymarket is positioning itself as the crypto version of the New Zealand-based online prediction market PredictIt, launched in 2014 with over 100,000 active monthly users, that lets you bet on political and financial events. By harnessing the power of free markets to demystify the real world events, Polymarket lets people to "put their money where their mouth is" by facilitating cryptocurrency bets on hotly debated topics and real-world political, healthcare, business and scientific events. The platform’s trading activity is then turned into actionable insights that can hold news publications more accountable and help analysts and academic institutions prevent the dissemination of fake news. The company is aiming at building a more “educated opinion” using blockchains, with open trading markets including the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the 2020 MLB World Series, Coinbase's IPO date, the future price of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Filecoin (FIL), the rate of coronavirus cases, the total value of the defi market, and even the release date of Drake's new album. Like PredictIt, Polymarket has an obvious gambling component, but it claims to be intended for informational and educational purposes only—charging no fees or commission, holding no custody of crypto assets, and hosting all trades on Ethereum smart contracts. In the first three months since its launch, Polymarket has seen over $1 million in trading volume.
