Online banking platform Greenwood, founded by former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young, rapper and activist Killer Mike, and music and TV executive Ryan Glover, is looking for podcast guests.

In third quarter of 2020, just 31 startups with black founders received venture capital out of 1,383 deals. This represents a 2% inclusion rate, despite blacks making up 15% of the U.S. population. Greenwood intends to change this.

Greenwood is named after the 35-city block district of Greenwood District near Tulsa, Oklahoma, known commonly as the “Black Wall Street" at the time, which was home to more than 300 black-owned stores and businesses before June 1, 1921, when the entire city was rioted, burned, and destroyed by a white mob in what became known as The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921.

The Greenwood Pay it Forward campaign will give $10,000 grants to black and latinx small business owners on a monthly basis and offer free meals to any family that signs up. They currently have more than 200,000 people on its waiting list to open accounts. They will also donate to King Center, UNCF and NAACP through spare change round-up feature in the app.

Most recently, actor and activist Jesse Williams, with a net worth of about $12 million, was the latest celebrity investor in Greenwood. Known for his role as Dr. Jackson Avery on the long-running ABC series Grey’s Anatomy, Williams is a lifelong civil rights activist who serves on the board of directors for Advancement Project, a national racial justice organization.
