Amazon Explore is a new interactive live-streaming service that allows you to connect one-on-one with live hosts around the world to learn, shop, and discover new locations right from your home. You can ask questions, investigate new locales, and even make purchases with Amazon gift cards and other payment methods—all from the comfort of home. It allows you to enable one-way video and two-way audio so you can see and hear the host without having to show your own camera. In many experiences, you can make purchases in the visiting locations and ask questions in real-time as you discover famous landmarks and secret hideouts with your native host. Amazon Explore will also let you take classes and learn new skills from instructors. You can linger, skip, or change directions on the fly, and take pictures right from the app. Most experiences are 30-60 minutes and you can cancel with no penalty up to 24 hours before the session begins. A laptop or desktop computer with a microphone is required (no phones or tablets) and the app will only work with Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox browsers with at least 5MB per second or better. With restrictions placed on travel and health risks caused by COVID-19, major tour companies have introduced a number of virtual tours, although most don’t allow you to shop and pay for souvenirs. Some examples of experiences on Amazon Explore are touring the Berlin Wall ($99), visiting a 500-year-old mansion in Peru ($70), shopping Mexico City’s urban art scene ($47), taking a cooking class in Tokyo's Kitchen Town ($45), and walking a farmers market in Costa Rica ($45). Amazon Explore is currently in beta and available only to U.S. customers by invite.
